The Banjo: African Roots and American Influences
The Ethnomusicology Program hosted a special lecture-demonstration on March 6, 2006, a collaborative event involving the well-known Maninka musician Cheick Hamala Djabate (specialist on a West African stringed instrument, ngoni, which is documented as the ancestor of the banjo) and the banjo performer and specialist Bob Carlin. The event had two components: a formal lecture with illustrations and an evening concert. The event was part of the Lectures in Musicology series.
