Funding Opportunities
Folklore Student and Faculty Grants
Owing to budget cuts, these small grants are cancelled until further notice.
The Center for Folklore Studies sponsors a small grants program, providing modest travel/research support for folklore students and assistance to faculty or students for special programs. Applicants are eligible to receive only one grant per fiscal year (July-June). Applications for special programs support during any current fiscal year must be submitted by March 31. Applications for travel support during any current fiscal year must be submitted by May 15. Note that funding is available until the budget for this program is met; support is offered on a first-come-first-served basis. Because of funding constraints and increased participation, CFS can no longer offer grants to support performances, equipment, or faculty travel.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be active participants in the OSU folklore community, meaning fairly regular attendance at Center events and ongoing involvement in teaching or studying folklore, even if it is not the primary disciplinary orientation.Students must be currently enrolled in an OSU graduate program or be advanced undergraduate students active in the folklore community; they must be in good academic standing and be making reasonable progress towards the degree, as defined in the Graduate School Handbook.
Eligible regular faculty include: senior lecturers, regular tenure-track faculty, and tenured faculty.
Travel Grants:
Graduate and advanced undergraduate students in folklore may apply for up to $250 per academic year to support travel for conference attendance or for research activities after they have exhausted their departmental and college sources (for the latter, Arts and Humanities students should see the Arts and Humanities Awards page.) Eligible costs include airfare or other transportation and lodging (within a per diem limit). NOTE: Funded travel MUST be completed prior to June 30 during the same fiscal year in which application is made. Support for travel occurring after July 1 (in any given year) falls into the new forthcoming academic year grant cycle.Special Programs Grants:
During a given annual cycle, folklore students and regular faculty may request up to $400 for support of an on-campus event such as a visiting speaker, conference workshop, or summer institute, or for course enrichment or outreach activities. Please note that we expect to give most of our support for campus events through these applications. Any payments need to be made directly either to another OSU unit or to a non-OSU guest presenter. Grants for special programs do not imply that CFS will provide local arrangements or other support for your guest presenter or program; this is your responsibility.Review Process:
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis as they are received. (It will be helpful, however, to get them in sooner rather than later in the school year.)Applications will be approved by the Center's Research Committee, consisting of two faculty members, a graduate student, and (as non-voting members) the Center Director and Associate Director. Applications are not in competition with one another. The only evaluation criteria are:
- that the applicant be an active participant in the OSU folklore community, as defined above
- that support is being requested for a substantive and appropriate folklore-related purpose
Application Process:
To apply for these grants, please complete the appropriate application form that is here linked as a [DOC] file, Funding Document. Be sure to spell out on the document- the specific purpose to be supported, with the relevant details (including specific dates/places)
- the relevance of the project to folklore studies
- the specific expenditures for which you are requesting support
Travel support must be arranged for well in advance of the actual travel. Travel support may NOT be awarded retroactively. Funds will be disbursed upon presentation of the relevant receipts. Publications resulting from research travel support and any printed matter relating to a special program (and/or its oral introduction) should acknowledge the support of The Ohio State University Center for Folklore Studies. After notification of being awarded a grant, you will need to provide the following information to the Center:
- For Travel Grants: To process the funding, CFS will need your student ID#, your SS# (but not, of course, by email), your email address, your home mailing address and daytime phone number, and your US residency status. If you are not a US citizen, you must identify your country of residence and also supply a copy of your visa or green card.
- for Special Programs Grants: To process support funding, CFS will need the sponsoring OSU unit with the email of the contact person for arranging transfer of funds or, in the case of an honorarium for a visitor not sponsored by another OSU unit, please include a 1-page CV and the information as in the item above, minus the OSU ID#. Honorarium payments cannot be processed without this information.
