CFS receives $100k to fund Ohio Field Schools

Lonnie w/ Muffler Man, Muffler Shop & Welding/Tire Station, New Rome, OH

The Center for Folklore Studies is pleased to announce that the Columbus Foundation donated $100,000 to support two Ohio Field Schools that will take place in summer 2017 & 2018! The credit-bearing, 4-6 week Ohio Field School will engage students in surveying, documenting, collecting and exhibiting Ohio folklore and cultural scenes.

This multi-year educational and outreach initiative will focus on a different Ohio region each year, beginning with the ethnically diverse rural and urban Appalachian communities of Southeastern Ohio.

The Folklore Archives hosts a rich history of original Ohio-based fieldwork, and serves as the primary repository of folklore in the state. The Field Schools will allow us to serve as a hub of cultural resource management and engagement for the state.  In addition to direct documentation of cultural arts, students and faculty will survey folklore archives and organizations across the state and link them to one another via a comprehensive list of statewide holdings. This project will interface with the American Folklore Society’s National Folklore Archive Initiative, for which we are a funded partner.

More details about the field schools is forthcoming. If you have any questions or are a student who would be interested in registering for the Ohio Field School, contact Cassie at patterson.493@osu.edu.
