Co-sponsored by the Department of Teaching and Learning.
Children's Folklore includes the games, songs, rhymes, jokes, crafts, and stunts of children's peer groups. Rooted in ethnography, framed by psychology and the history of power, the study of children's folklore tells us much about what is on children's minds. This presentation share audiovisual material from one of Anna's longitudinal studies and offers her latest work in recess advocacy.
Anna Beresin has two Ph.D.s from the University of Pennsylvania—one in Folklore, and one in the Psychology of Education. She is associate professor of liberal arts at The University of the Arts, and a regular visiting associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Her first book, Recess Battles, debunks myths about recess violence and challenges the notion that schoolyard play is a waste of time. Her new book The Art of Play: Recess and the Practice of Invention comes out in November through Temple University Press.
Lunch for attendees follows.
