Guillermo Arriaga

Guillermo Arriaga was born and raised in Fremont, Ohio. His parents moved to Ohio in 1940, to work in the lime fields so Guillermo grew up working among immigrants all his life.  His story is compelling in many levels; he has been a teacher, and a leader and spokesperson for Latino students and parents. He also takes about his personal relationship with the Spanish language. He lost some of his home language when, as a child, he started school and was expected to only speak English. In college, he craved connection to his heritage and reclaimed that part of his identity by learning Spanish again.
