2017-01-11 16:30:00 2017-01-11 19:30:00 Encountering the Local: 2nd DEALL-CFS Symposium on Chinese and North American Folklore The Department of East Asia Languages and Literatures (DEALL) and the Center for Folklore Studies (CFS), invite proposals for the 2nd DEALL-CFS Symposium on Chinese and North American Folklore on Thursday, January 11th, 2018, from 4:30-7:30 pm. Following the symposium held in 2015, this year will continue the cross-cultural dialogue. The theme for this year’s symposium is “Encountering the Local.” Any topics related to folk life in the context of Chinese or North American cultures are suitable, and presentations could derive from one’s own area of expertise or lay out preliminary ideas of a new interest.This year’s symposium will reinvigorate inter-departmental dialogue by emphasizing the importance of mutual investment and connections, in the process of understanding a culture with which one is not familiar. Therefore, the DEALL visiting scholars are encouraged but not required to read Dr. Noyes’s Humble Theory: Folklore's Grasp on Social Life, and to share thoughts on this book in combination with personal experiences in the US. CFS graduate students or scholars are encouraged to examine Dr. Bender’s The Columbia Anthology of Chinese Folk and Popular Literature and also share thoughts on this book in combination with personal experiences in or impressions about China. Printed versions of both books will be available in LFGC library by mid-December.This year’s symposium will invite Dr. Mark Bender and Dr. Katherine Borland as discussants. Evaluation of the abstracts will be conducted in consultation with both scholars. Faculty members and students from DEALL and CFS are also welcomed to participate as discussants. Dinner will be provided. Prospective presenters are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract, maximum 100 words, via email to Wei Liu (liu.4911@osu.edu). The deadline for abstract submission is 12:00 pm EST December 5th, 2017. Please use the following abstract format.
