Join the Center for Folklore Studies for a screening and discussion of The Taste of Samanu (2018), an ethnographic film by OSU graduate students Afsane Rezaei (Comparative Studies) and Ehsan Estiri (NELC).
The film follows a group of Iranian-American women in Southern California who work collectively to prepare a charity bazaar every year before the Persian New Year (Nowruz). Through the lens of the small community event and its various framings, the film explores the dynamics of gender in folk culture and the construction/negotiation of Iranian Identity and culture in diaspora.
This event is part of the Center for Folklore Studies' Ethnographic Film Series, and is co-sponsored by Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, Department of Comparative Studies, and Middle East Studies Center.
