Mark Bender

Mark Bender and his wife Fu Wei's photo exhibition,"Raiment of Zomia," located in the entry of Hagerty Hall, features the appliquéd and embroidered folk costumes of the southeast Asian massif that spans northern Indochina, Burma, Southwest China, and into northern India, Afghanistan and Pakistan. This is the region of mountain-dwelling ethnic minorities, resistant to state governance, that James C. Scott discussed in The Art of Not Being Governed (2009). It is an area where Mark has been working for twenty years and built up a strong comparative understanding of the region's poetics and cultural revivalism.
