Symposium on the Linguistics of Place

June 9, 2014
Saturday, April 20, 2013 to Sunday, April 21, 2013
Round Meeting Room, Ohio Union
Political map of counties around the central Ohio region

The Center for Folklore Studies and the Linguistics Department will be co-hosting a symposium on Language and Place April 20-21, bringing together scholars across disciplines. The format will include time for open discussion and breakout groups to facilitate inter-disciplinary exchange. Plenary speakers will be Galey Modan (The Ohio State University), Barbara Johnstone (Carnegie Mellon University), and Lauren Hall-Lew (University of Edinburgh).

A speaker's hometown, birthplace, neighborhood, region, or country may be key, if not primary, factors in their self-identity, often in interaction with other social factors such as gender, ethnicity, or political affiliation. While region or geography is sometimes taken for granted in linguistic work, recent research has highlighted the complexity of the ways in which speakers use language to orient towards place, demonstrating that linguistic practice does not merely reflect place, but also constructs it.

Locating Language: A Symposium on the Linguistics of Place invites dialogue about the relationship between language, place, and identity from both well-established researchers and new voices. Papers in all sub-fields of linguistics and related fields are welcome, including sociolinguistic variation, linguistic anthropology, discourse analysis, language contact, and sociophonetics. The format of the symposium will mix traditional presentations with extended question/discussion periods.
