Fieldworker: Annette B. Fromm
In America, Mrs. Resnik never had to work. Her husband worked as a shochet (ritual butcher) and owned property. She was able to “become a lady” in America. Her family of six children are very successful in Northern Ohio. One of her granddaughters is Judy Resnik, one of the women astronauts. -- Annette B. Fromm, May 25, 1979.
This small collection focuses on Mrs. Anna Resnik of Cleveland, Ohio, and her cabbage borscht recipe. Fieldworker Annette B. Fromm recounts that Mrs. Resnik spent the first part of her life in Lithuania and Ukraine, but in 1925 she and her husband emigrated to Tel Aviv, Israel to escape extreme anti-Semitism in Ukraine. After five years of struggling there, they moved to the U.S. and finally ended up in Cleveland. At the time of the collection, Mrs. Resnik was living in Council Gardens, a elderly community for Jewish residents in Cleveland Heights.
