My initial reasoning for enrolling in SPAN 5689S was to better my understanding of Ohio’s various pockets of Latino communities spread throughout the state. I grew up in Chicago and have lived in a very homogenous Mexican Spanish-speaking community for the majority of my life. Upon moving to Columbus for my graduate degree, I spent the first year of my program frustrated with the lack of Latino and Spanish-speaking people at my immediate disposal. I learned of Dr. Foulis’ class and thought it would help me navigate some of the frustrations I had been having as a recent Ohio transplant.

            I was immediately interested in working with ONLO as soon as Dr. Foulis had mentioned it in class. Given the current pandemic, it was clear that any sort of community engagement done this semester would have to be accomplished in alternative and remote ways. I was already familiar with ONLO prior to this class, given that I had attended a lecture by Dr. Foulis during my undergraduate career where I heard her speak on the project. The project itself is an interesting concept – the idea that individual stories can be used to speak largely about migration and Latino identity was appealing to me. Oral histories are a valid form of documenting history that should be seen as valid and useful. Rather than reading a third-party source that is speaking indirectly about a specific subset of people, the oral history component of this project allows for Latinos across Ohio to tell their own stories.

            Again, due to COVID-19 we were not travelling to conduct these interviews with Dr. Foulis, as has been usually done in past years. Instead, myself and other students were charged with working with the digital archival materials that make up ONLO. We met bi-monthly with Dr. Foulis, as well as with Dr. Cassie Patterson to report back on our progress. Our work can be summarized with four key responsibilities:

1. View all relevant/assigned ONLO interviews
2. Using a coding system assigned by Cassie, rename and organize our assigned files using the designated classification system
3. Log all file names to a shared Google Spreadsheet page
4. Translate all tags and interview summaries in Spanish and English

All of the work was done remotely. We were given a hard drive by Dr. Foulis that contained five folders from interviewees. Most folders were comprised of images taken during the interview, the raw and edited video interviews themselves, and various other types of miscellaneous files. Some folders, for example, contained translated transcriptions of interviews done in Spanish. Others had summaries of interviews in English. Most of this work seemed to have been done Dr. Foulis or past students who had worked on ONLO as well.

Many of the conversations we had during our group meetings revolved around the functions of archives themselves. With Cassie’s expertise in the field, we discussed many of the nuances of archives. Archives themselves are political sources of information in the sense that they are meant to be where objective experiences can be logged in a truthful manner. Archives themselves are political, but there are also politics present within the creation of archives as well. Who, for example, is funding specific archives? Where are archives normally located, geographically? Who has access to archives? With these ideas in mind, we decided early on the semester that we would work to make the ONLO digital archive as accessible as possible by having information available both in English and Spanish. This was important for us, as we believe it is a fair and equitable move to make ethnographic information accessible for the populations of people that the archive is comprised of. Without their stories, for instance, ONLO would be empty. So, it is only fair that they have the opportunity to access the archive should they choose to.

I spent the end of the semester working with the ONLO interviews that Dr. Foulis conducted in Oaxaca, Mexico. I found these to be an exciting and nuanced addition to the ONLO archive, which prior to these interviews focused solely on the experiences of Latinos currently living in Ohio. The Oaxaca interview demonstrate the rippling effects that migration can have on members of a community. It was very interesting hearing the men and women in these interviews speak on specific members of their family moving to Ohio for a variety of reasons. One interview in particular mentions how foreign Ohio can be for Oaxacans, in the context of American knowledge. Many of the speak to how, for example, they have interacted with Latinos from California or Texas, but not Ohio. It was an interesting way to end the semester working with ONLO, as it painted a very interesting picture of how ONLO can change and broaden its mission in the years to come.

Mi razonamiento inicial para inscribirme en esta clase fue mejorar mi comprensión de los diversos focos de comunidades latinas de Ohio repartidos por todo el estado. Crecí en Chicago y he vivido en una comunidad de hispanohablantes mexicana muy homogénea durante la mayor parte de mi vida. Al mudarme a Columbus para obtener mi título de posgrado, pasé el primer año de mi programa frustrado por la falta de personas latinas y de hispanohablantes a mi disposición inmediata. Me enteré de la clase de la Dra. Foulis y pensé que me ayudaría a superar algunas de las frustraciones que había estado teniendo como trasplante reciente de Ohio.

Hi, my name is Emma Berlin. I am a currently a senior double majoring in World Language Education and Spanish. I am hopeful to get a job as a Spanish teacher at a school in central Ohio when I graduate in the spring! Being an education major, I never really had any opportunities to have any interactions with archiving and accessioning before this semester in the Spanish in Ohio course. I’ve utilized plenty of different archives in all of my classes throughout my undergraduate career, but I never found myself really thinking about what it actually takes to create these complex archives that people have access to. When I heard that I could have the opportunity to interact with the ONLO files and actually have the opportunity to archive and accession them, I jumped at the chance.

 The archival process was unlike anything I had ever done before. There were so many different small aspects that went into this process. I never knew exactly how detail oriented I would have to be. I found myself working on the archival process for hours on end, never wanting to stop until everything was organized exactly how it needed to be and the file looked complete. The actual archival process and the organizational structure of it was something that intimidated me at first. Looking at the different codes that I would have to input was something that looked extremely complex and, even with the training, I was worried that I would mess it up. As I continued working on the archive and my files, however, I found myself getting better and better at knowing exactly how to organize and type out the file codes. The more I worked on the file, I even started to find the archival work soothing and calming. It was nice to just sit down and be able to work through my files and write out the same thing over and over again and watch the file become more and more put together.

 Along with discovering that I enjoyed archival work, I also discovered just how much truly went into the ONLO archive. There were so many aspects in my external drive that I didn’t see any part of on the website. I was able to see all the photos that were taken, watch the raw footage of the interviews, and even read some transcripts and translations that were created from the interview. All these different aspects amazed me because it showed just how much work actually went into creating this archive and making available to the public.

The biggest reason I loved doing this archival work is due to the fact that all of us were working together to make it a bilingual archive. This always stood out to me in importance because all of these participants in ONLO are Latinos in Ohio, many of whom speak Spanish or have a close relationship with the Spanish language. Transferring the ONLO archive over to a bilingual archive was something that I thought was crucial because many archives are exclusive enough as it is. It is critical that the archive is actually accessible for the people who are being interviewed, which required for it to become a bilingual archive.

Overall, I loved working with ONLO and the CFS. It was great to have a hand in working on creating a bilingual archive that will be accessible to those who may want to access it. I loved seeing everything that went into archiving and I loved working closely with my peers to come up with solutions in order to make the archive open for anyone to access. I definitely have a newfound appreciation for everything that goes into archival work and will never find myself taking it for granted ever again.

My name is Kenzie Coyne and I was an ArchIntern for the Oral Narratives of Latin@s in Ohio during the fall of 2020.

I was motivated to be an ArchIntern for ONLO because I attended a Science Sunday lecture through the Ohio State University in called “Collections as Data: Combining Data Science and the Power of Library Collections to Unlock New Understanding.” It focused on the process of transforming physical collections into an online resource in order to make them more accessible to academics and the community. I learned more about the importance of accessibility and I realized that I could play a role in ensuring the voices and stories of the Latinx community in Ohio are able to be heard. I also saw this opportunity as an excellent way to explore the unique stories of the Latinx community in Ohio.

During this internship, I worked to develop a finding aid for nine interviews conducted via the ONLO project so that the content would be available in a useful and organized format for the Latinx community, researchers, and anyone interested in the information. I learned a great deal about archival work and the precise attention to detail that it requires, and as a result I strengthened my ability to work methodically and with diligence. I transferred many of the skills I learned during this process into the organization of my own digital files. This experience also motivated me to think more critically about topics like accessibility, representation, and the impact that archives have on individuals, communities, and research. It was a rewarding experience to be able to use my knowledge of Spanish to help in this project while simultaneously improving my abilities in Spanish and learning more about the Latinx community in Ohio.

Due to my time working on this project, I have developed a deeper understanding and appreciation for value of oral history. I see this project, and oral history in general, to an important tool in exploring and developing a better understanding of different cultures, perspectives, and ideas. The Oral Narratives of Latin@s in Ohio project emphasizes the diversity of the Latinx population in Ohio and functions as an important platform in sharing the unique lives and stories of Latin@s, as well as giving them the recognition that they deserve for all the work they have done to make communities better across the state. This archival work is important in ensuring that these oral histories can be shared even further, not only in terms of digital access, but also accessible in terms of language.

The interviews and content I worked with during this internship covered a variety of topics and demonstrates the vast diversity of the Latinx community in Ohio. Interviewees spoke about topics from family, faith, education, community, and music to issues such as the healthcare system, politics, discrimination, and more. I’ve learned traditions, ideas, and values that I was not familiar with before and as a result I have grown a deeper understanding of the regional and cultural differences within the Latinx community. Additionally, it was interesting to learn more about generational differences and how families transmit their traditions to their children. I also took time to reflect on the similarities and differences between how I view Ohio in comparison to the thoughts of the interviewees.

I strongly encourage others to explore the content that ONLO has to offer. This project takes an important positive step in increasing and diversifying the representation of the Latinx community by providing a range of oral histories and interviews that will only continue to grow with time. I’m thankful that I had the opportunity to improve the availability of this content so that it can impact more people, and I look forward to seeing the growth of this project in the future.

Archiving Connections with the Latinx Community: Reflections on My Time as an Archival Intern with the Ohio Narratives of Latinos in Ohio Collection

I’ll admit, a brief wave of jealousy spread over me as I listened to, yet another friend describe the incredible experience that they had while they were studying abroad in Latin America. Although I tried my best to keep an open mind about the Spanish in Ohio (SPAN 5689S) course I had just scheduled, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed that wouldn’t have the same opportunity travel to the countries that I had been studying for the last three years. The ongoing COVID-19 situation certainly did not improve how I felt in the slightest. After all, how could the goals of a class created around cultural immersion and community service be met during a global pandemic? Just when the seemingly daunting task of completing 70 service hours within the Latinx community appeared as out of reach as ever, I was introduced to the Oral Narratives of Latinos in Ohio (ONLO) collection.

Organized by the Center for Folklore Studies here at The Ohio State University, the ONLO collection contains over 100 recorded interviews and their associated pictures of members of the Latinx community from all over the state. It has been through this collection, organized by Dr. Elena Foulis and Dr. Cassie Patterson, that I have since been able to connect to the Latinx population at a deeper level than I had ever thought was possible and in a unique way that I have never before imagined.

As an archival intern, I periodically received files containing various images, video recordings, translations, and transcripts associated with the stories that make up the collection. Then, my job was to rename these files in a specific way using easy to understand accessioning codes. We did this in an effort to increase the accessibility of the collection to academic researchers or members of the general public who might be interested in learning more about the experiences of Latinx immigrants in Ohio. Finally, after organizing the files, I wrote short descriptions about some of the materials based on available information.

As I look back on the experiences that I had during the semester and my work with the collection, one of the most important things I observed was the large number of similarities that could be seen across the many stories that collectively make up the archive. As I watched more and more interviews, often time listening to them more than once, it was very apparent that each experience was unique. This, for example, was something that could be seen in the various ways in which interviewees described their places of origin, their daily lives before immigrating to the United States, or their first impressions of Ohio. But at the same time, there was certainly an ever-present sense of commonality that simply could not be ignored. For example, after immigrating, many of the interviewees attempted to preserve their Hispanic roots by teaching their native languages to their children, continuing to the cook food of their respective cultures, and also forming new relationships and communities with other immigrants from all over Latin America. Additionally, the reasons that people moved to Ohio was often repeated across interviews, with many making the difficult decision to leave their homes in search of economic opportunities or, in general, to improve the lives of them and their kids.

Part of what initially attracted me to this unique opportunity was the potential to learn a new skill that would surely be useful no matter what direction my future career takes me. Having worked with museum collections made up of physical artifacts in the past, I wanted to challenge myself and broaden my skillset to include knowledge associated with the organization of valuable stories presented in an online format. Through my time with the ONLO collection, I found that there were certainly differences in the ways that physical and digital collections are organized. For example, while a physical collection might be, to some extent, organized based on visual appeal and aesthetics, the accessibility of the ONLO collection was our top priority. As a result, the other archival interns and I paid close attention to ways in which we labeled our assigned files.

Building off of this, not only have I walked away with knowledge about how vast collections should be organized, but the importance of doing so was made clear to me as well. Getting to see the significance of each file that contributes to the finalized story made me realize how much information about a person’s life can be contained in a few sentences, a family photograph, or a personal poem. Furthermore, I was amazed at how the culmination of all of the oral narratives was able to paint such a detailed image of an incredibly diverse community and culture. As I sorted my files, I took a lot of pride in my work, knowing I was helping to increase the access that people from all over the world would have to such a wealth of knowledge. In working with this collection and now sharing about my experience, I hope that others, not only those with a personal connection to or knowledge of Hispanic culture, but also those who are looking for a starting point to learn more, are encouraged to explore this collection and all that it has to offer. From these narratives, the difficulty of moving to a new city, state, or country could not have been made clearer to me. Most importantly, I hope that those who have immigrated to Ohio from Latin American countries or from areas of the United States with large Latinx communities find comfort in the numerous stories found in this collection. The importance of archival work and the recording of personal experiences is clear. The personal experiences of immigrants and ethnic minorities have been casted to the wayside for hundreds of years, yet often, provide the most realistic descriptions of a time or a place. It is my hope that the ONLO collection can serve alongside Latin@ Stories Across Ohio and other valuable resources as an additional tool used for the preservation of Latinx culture in this country.

¿Qué me atrajo de este proyecto?

Originalmente, pensé que esta sería una gran oportunidad para exponer las conexiones que he estado creando entre mis estudios de antropología y español. En semestres anteriores, me ofrecí como voluntario para ayudar a organizar y digitalizar archivos en el departamento de antropología, que era muy necesario debido a las condiciones de los materiales. Como resultado, cuando se presentó la oportunidad de hacer un trabajo similar a través de las Narrativas Orales de Latinos en Ohio (ONLO), aproveché la oportunidad. Además, creo que el trabajo de archivo es interesante porque se encuentra en un estado de limbo, donde es un registro de archivo pero también es historia en proceso. En cuanto a trabajar con ONLO específicamente, creo que el trabajo del Dr. Foulis es muy importante y se debe ayudar a preservarlo por muchas razones, pero la más destacada es porque creo que es exclusivo de la universidad.

¿Qué habilidades y/o conocimientos adquirí?

Personalmente, siento que he ganado una mejor apreciación y comprensión del valor del trabajo de archivo. Las historias orales permiten que las personas y las comunidades puedan contar su historia desde su perspectiva y de formas que sean beneficiosas para ellos. Lo cual es particularmente importante e impactante para las comunidades minoritarias como la comunidad latinal aquí en los Estados Unidos, especialmente en un lugar como Ohio. Me presentaron a varios líderes comunitarios en todo el estado y el importante trabajo que han estado haciendo, el cual me ha brindado consuelo y esperanza, especialmente durante este tiempo. What attracted me to this project?

Originally, I thought this would be a great opportunity to expound upon the connections I have been creating between my Anthropology and Spanish majors. In previous semesters, I volunteered to help with organizing and digitizing archives in the anthropology department, which was needed badly due to the conditions of the materials. As a result, when the opportunity to do similar work through the Oral Narratives of Latin@s in Ohio (ONLO) was presented, I took the chance. Furthermore, I think Archive work is interesting because it is sort of in a limbo state, where it is an archival record but it is also history in the making. As for working with ONLO specifically, I think the work of Dr. Foulis is very important and should be helped to be preserved for many reasons, but most prominently because I believe it is unique to the university.

What kinds of abilities and/or insight did I gain?

Personally, I feel that I have gained a better appreciation and understanding of the value of archival work. Oral narratives allow individuals and communities to tell their story from their perspective and in ways that are most beneficial to them which is especially important and impactful for minority communities like the

Latino community here in the United States, particularly in a place like Ohio. Through ONLO, I was able to be introduced to various community leaders across the state and the important work they have been doing, which has brought me comfort and hope, especially during this time. This archival experience has been crucial in facilitating understanding of the complexities of the Latino community from first-hand stories, rather than outside voices. Archives are sites of power, of knowledge and can serve as advocacy and activism, which has helped me to see that archival work is a real form of service.

ONLO has also helped to challenge my ideas of accessibility and question what it means. Since the archive is about and for the Latin@ community, it has been a crucial aspect of this archive work to ensure that all language barriers are addressed through categorizing, translating etc. english, spanish and bilingual interviews.

Why is archival work important?

In general, archival work is important because it protects and preserves memory, knowledge. Archives like the Oral Narratives of Latin@s in Ohio capture the lives, stories and meaningful people, places and things, preserving them long after the memories and storytellers have passed. Archival work helps to make other people's work possible, like historians, researchers, activists, and even the interested general public.

For the community, it is important to reiterate to others that the Latino community is not a monolith, that the Latino community encompasses so many cultures from so many countries. And while there may be similarities, there are also differences, big and small. Also to demonstrate the importance and impact of oral histories because oral histories help to understand how individuals and communities experienced the forces of history, which is often evident in the ONLO archives, with examples of people who experienced. Oral histories provide a more complete and accurate picture of the past, especially with supporting ephemeral items such as pictures, letters, maps, trinkets, and relics. Individual and personal experiences useful to diverse perspectives and points of view that fill the gap or add more information to documented and undocumented stories in the community. Finally, oral stories and projects like ONLO preserve community stories for future generations, a strong 'portrait' of community identities in contemporary and what is remembered from the past, which by sharing my personal experience with others, you can help raise awareness and help others understand the value of archival work.
