Carlos Martinez has experienced a lot in his life so far: from living in a pretty dangerous community in the Bronx, moving to Ohio and losing a little bit of his Spanish, and having such strong roots to his ‘native’ country and culture. His history demonstrates an image of what it is like being a Latino with African heritage and the social challenges that many Afro-Latinos face in the United States. Carlos also describes his love for languages. Love for languages with the ones with which he has grown up, the languages that he learns now, and how he helps others here to learn other languages and give them inspiration to be successful in their lives. Carlos describes the varied experiences of Latinos in the United States, and through this, demonstrates through his lived experience that latinidad is not a monolithic concept. |
