John Alvarez Turner is originally from Puerto Rico. He lived in Florida before moving to Ohio for work, and like other Latinos that moved from States with larger Latino communities, he learned and is learning to adapt to the new environment, including the weather. He has taken up the role of cultural educator with the people he interacts with and also in his job as Director of the Multicultural center at the University of Akron. While he shares many of the cultural traditions and experiences of other Latinos, he also is outspoken about his sexual identity as a gay man and the religions he practices, SanterĂa and Catholicism.
