Katy spent her youth and university years in Lima, Peru. She first came to the States on a scholarship to study at Marshall University in West Virginia, where she completed her Masters in Safety Management. She and her husband both received scholarships and they planned to get there degrees and return to Peru. However, when Katy was offered a job at a large engineering consultant firm she hoped to apply for a work visa and stay a bit longer. Nevertheless, their plan was also to return home. Once Katy was in the US she struggled with English, especially the West Virginian accent. She was challenged by the lack of public transportation and missed her family a lot. Now in Cleveland, Ohio Katy is involved with the Latino community and diversity initiatives at her company. She tries to incorporate Peruvian traditions and Spanish into her home and reflects that since COVID-19 she has been more successful at getting her son practicing Spanish. Now her family exclusively speaks Spanish on the weekends.
Katy pasó su juventud y años universitarios en Lima, Perú. Primero llegó a los Estados Unidos con una beca para estudiar en la Universidad Marshall en West Virginia, donde completó su Maestría en Gestión de la Seguridad. Tanto ella como su esposo recibieron becas y planeaban graduarse y regresar a Perú. Sin embargo, cuando a Katy le ofrecieron un trabajo en una gran empresa consultora de ingeniería, esperaba solicitar una visa de trabajo y quedarse un poco más. Sin embargo, su plan también era regresar a casa. Una vez que Katy estuvo en los Estados Unidos, luchó con el inglés, especialmente con el acento de Virginia Occidental. Ella se enfrentó a la falta de transporte público y extrañaba mucho a su familia. Ahora en Cleveland, Ohio, Katy está involucrada con la comunidad latina y las iniciativas de diversidad en su empresa. Intenta incorporar las tradiciones peruanas y el español en su hogar y reflexiona que desde COVID-19 ha tenido más éxito en lograr que su hijo practique español. Ahora su familia habla exclusivamente español los fines de semana.
