Mother-daughter duo, Rosemarie and Nicole are from Peru. Rosemarie came to Ohio first, and her daughter join her shortly after, although not soon enough! Rosemarie talked to me about her first jobs, her experiences with Anglos and Latinos and the discrimination she felt that surprised her. Her story is typical, in the sense that she struggle to learn the language and adapt to a new culture, however, her experiences prepare her to be able to guide her own daughters to cope and adjust to a new environment. Nicole is still in high school and eager to start the university. In only a short three years, she has become fully bilingual and is well on her way to becoming a college student.
