Odaliz is from Southeast Puerto Rico. She is the sixth of seven kids. Odaliz grew up outside of the house as a member of an inseparable group of friends of all ages. She remembers playing lots of sports, traditional games like Cebollita, and playing in the river although she knew she wasn’t allowed. Since many of her siblings were older and already living in the States, Odaliz’s family would try to visit her siblings every summer. Since she was exposed to English at a young age, by traveling to the States and English classes at school, Odaliz has always managed Spanish and English very well. Odaliz spent six years teaching English in Puerto Rico, however she never mastered the language until she moved to the US. As a teacher, she reflects on the structure of Puerto Rican English education and its failures. Odaliz’s first experiences after moving to the States were challenging. In addition to transitioning to English, she recalls experiencing culture shock and amazement by how poorly Puerto Rican’s were treated. After a year in New York Odaliz came to Ohio. She remembers the challenges of moving somewhere where she didn’t have any relatives and reflects on her discovery of the Latina Mentoring Academy and the sense of community and belonging it offered her. Nevertheless, Odaliz still experiments with lonesomeness. She misses being close to her family, especially since coronavirus pandemic. However, Odaliz considers herself very fortunate and says she has found a second home in Ohio.
Odaliz es del sureste de Puerto Rico. Ella es la sexta de siete hermanos. Odaliz creció fuera de casa como miembro de un grupo inseparable de amigos de todas las edades. Recuerda haber practicado muchos deportes, juegos tradicionales como Cebollita y jugar en el río, aunque sabía que no estaba permitido. Dado que muchos de sus hermanos eran mayores y ya vivían en Estados Unidos, la familia de Odaliz intentaba visitar a sus hermanos todos los veranos. Desde que estuvo expuesta al inglés a una edad temprana, viajando a los Estados Unidos y las clases de inglés en la escuela, Odaliz siempre ha manejado muy bien el español y el inglés. Odaliz pasó seis años enseñando inglés en Puerto Rico, sin embargo, nunca dominó el idioma hasta que se mudó a los Estados Unidos. Como maestra, reflexiona sobre la estructura de la educación del inglés puertorriqueño y sus fallas. Las primeras experiencias de Odaliz después de mudarse a Estados Unidos fueron difíciles. Además de la transición al inglés, ella recuerda haber experimentado un choque cultural y asombro por lo mal que se trataba a los puertorriqueños. Después de un año en Nueva York, Odaliz llegó a Ohio. Recuerda los desafíos de mudarse a un lugar donde no tenía parientes y reflexiona sobre su descubrimiento de la Latina Mentoring Academy y el sentido de comunidad y pertenencia que le ofrecía. Sin embargo, Odaliz todavía experimenta con la soledad. Echa de menos estar cerca de su familia, especialmente desde la pandemia del coronavirus. Sin embargo, Odaliz se considera muy afortunada y dice que ha encontrado un segundo hogar en Ohio.
