CFS Receives Columbus Foundation Award for Field School

Students and community partners hiking Lampblack Trail in Scioto County.

We are thrilled to announce that the Center for Folklore Studies has received $25,000 from the Columbus Foundation for the Ohio Field School.  An initial donation of $100,000 from the Columbus Foundation in 2016 allowed us to successfully conduct an immersive field school in Scioto County for graduate and undergraduate students for the past three years as well as to host a “flipped” exhibition on Placemaking in Southern Ohio. Our novel exhibition created a space for Scioto Countians to gather and dialog around themes and concerns that students had identified in our preliminary fieldwork. The current donation allows us to continue to provide quality educational experiences to students as we work with communities to document, reflect on, and dialog about everyday life in Appalachian Ohio through community service-oriented research.
