Folklore doctoral candidates selected to receive Fulbright-Hays funding

Kati Fitzgerald and Nathan Young

Five doctoral candidates from the College of Arts and Sciences have been selected for funding under the 2018 U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowship Program--two of which are doctoral candidates in folklore. The DDRA Fellowship Program provides opportunities to doctoral candidates to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. Several CFS students have received Fulbright awards in the past few years, including Tim Thurston, Ben Gatling, Chris Hemmig, and Amanda Randhawa--quite a record!

The Office of International Affairs administers the Fulbright-Hays program for Ohio State, and grant competitions are held annually. Doctoral candidates interested in applying for the award must contact Fulbright-Hays program director, Joanna Kukielka-Blaser. The DDRA grant is highly competitive with approximately 90 awards selected annually for funding nationwide, across disciplines. See below for a full list of awardees from the college.

John Bundschuh, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, “Tense Aspect and Modality in the Creation of Narrative Structure in Japanese Kundokugo Buddhist Texts”

Ashlee Dauphinais, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, “Linguistic Practices among Women with Turner Syndrome in Brazil”

Kati Fitzgerald, Department of Comparative Studies, “No Pure Lands — The Contemporary Buddhism of Tibetan Lay Women”

Barbara Roth, Department of Political Science, “Settlement Social Norms and Conflict Migration in Bosnia”

Nathan Young, Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, “Modernization's Other — Nostalgia for Village Life in Turkey”

Congratuations, Kati and Nathan!
