The Folklore Student Association is hosting an art competition to design a mascot and design element for the annual Indiana University and Ohio State University Graduate Student Conference in Folklore and Ethnomusicology. All students, faculty and OSU staff are welcome to enter. We are seeking a design that meets the following parameters:

  • We are looking for a mythical creature, whether a real animal, a folkloric cryptid (bigfoot, jackalope, etc.) or a new creature imagined by you!
  • The design must be in black and white for printing purposes.
  • We are particularly interested in styles that represent traditional folk art methods: wood cut/ wood block prints, papercuts or other designs that translate well into printing in black and white.
  • Our 2025 conference theme is "Shared Traditions: Beyond Human Experiences." We are inviting presenters (and artists) to think about non-human relationships and components.
  • Digital art is welcome. Physical (analog) art should be scanned in a high resolution (300 dpi) and submitted as a vector, if possible, or an editable jpg or png so it can be turned into a vector.
  • The deadline to submit your art is December 10, 2024. Submit your art digitally via email to: miller.11759@osu.edu. If you have created analog art, we may request to display the original at the OSU/IU conference in February 2025.
  •

First prize will be a $75 Amazon gift card.

Submissions will be judged by members of the Folklore Student Association and results will be announced in January.
