Congratulations to Lydia Smith (Art), who was awarded a Global Arts + Humanities Discovery Theme Graduate Team Fellowship for the 2021-2022 academic year! This program brings together eight graduate students and awards each student a yearlong fellowship. Lydia will work on her MFA thesis project, Leave No Stone Unturned, to be presented at Urban Arts Space in Spring 2022. This project investigates the structure of the cemetery as a space where life, death, and memory are uniquely entangled. Within this framework, the palimpsest, archive, ruin, and monument are manifestations she researches to sense the echoes of voices beneath the surface of landscapes. The language of drawing lies is at the core of this project, but also expands into the forms of photography, sculpture, performance, and writing.
