Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Areas of Expertise

  • Reading/Learning Cross-Culturally with Young Adolescents
  • Multicultural and Latino/a Literature
  • Sociocultural and Critical Research, Theory, and Practice
  • Middle Grades (4-8th) Literacy Education
  • Multicultural Literature in Education
  • Development of Literary Understanding

My current research focuses on 'global peers' and their collaborative production of local imagined and material spaces in their school and community.

I am also rethinking and documenting new forms of reading education that emphasize the arts (versus extended discussion) as a mode of interpretation. I argue that such approaches are more inclusive of and afford more critical inquiry into the meaning of cultural identity, agency, and power in texts and everyday interactions.
